If you're wondering about the title, it's simple. American politics have been over-run by "partisan politics". (Partisan politics is making political decisions based solely on your political party.) The bureaucracy of partisan war-fare in Congress has become so ridged, American policy is sinking quicker than the titanic. (Pardon the bad metaphor) How so? Political beliefs have been packaged into two columns, and if you subscribe to one, you inherit them all. If you believe Sean Hannity, you support any ONE of the following: abortion, gay rights, civil liberties, anti-Iraq war, etc. then you MUST be a liberal Democrat and therefore support ALL liberal issues. Moreover, if a Democrat or Republican should vote against their party, then they are considered a "party deserter", and are shunned by other members of their party. Our framers certainly did not intend on a ridged, two party system. Power was not given to a single individual, it was devided into three branches. The purpose was to insure the voice of each person (or more accurately, each state) was heard, and considered when creating policy. "Voting your conscious" has gone by the wayside. The average Americans voice, the moderate voice, is not being heard.
Why now? Today (10-03-2005) was John Roberts first day as sitting Supreme Court Justice. Now, Bush has nominated Harriet Miers to replace Sandra Day O'Connor, who will be sitting on the High Court until a new Justice is confirmed. Just what do we know about the people being nominated into the highest court in the land? Our Younger generation is, more and more, disenfranchising themselves with politics, and it's not difficult to understand why. Fox news, and CNN (Fox news light) have become nothing more than a three-ring circus flouting partisan bashing "coverage", while the facts get lost in the ruckus. (Recently, they have morphed into The Weather Chanel 2 and 3. Stay tuned for our upcoming article "The News Network That Cried Wolf".) Even I can't watch C-Span for more than ten minutes without wanting to gouge out my ear-drums. I get a nose bleed every time Arlen Specter opens his mouth. How are 60 year old, and up, senators connecting with young people? MTV's rock the vote is viewed as liberal propaganda, and that's not far from the truth. It looks like where ever you turn, no one is reporting the news; they're reporting their version of the news. And what's worse, they call you stupid if you have any views that are different. (Bill O'rily, for one example) It is important to say that this is not a news blog; it is a political op-ed blog. With that said however, every article posted on this blog will contain a full bibliography, and just as important, will maintain a fair approach, and give a truly open forum for discussion and criticism. We encourage you to post your thoughts, or e-mail us (our group e-mail will be posted at the end of this post) with your comments. We will also post a bi-monthly "Get something started" column, giving suggestions on how you (mainly aimed young-adults) can get involved in the political machine that is shaping your future for whatever side you sit on, from left to right, and everywhere in-between.
